Biography
Prolific, distinguished art director, in the US from c. 1905 and one of the most important and gifted designers of the classical Hollywood studio system. After some notable work in the silent era, Grot's career flowered in the 1930s and 40s, when he had a huge influence on the distinctive look of the often gritty product at Warner Brothers as the studio's head of art direction and set decoration. Grot showed imagination and flair for harsh realism, Expressionistic horror and ornate romantic moods alike. He designed films across a wide range of genres and a rich, dark range of gray scales within black and white cinema, notably for fellow European emigres Michael Curtiz and William Dieterle.
