Synopsis

Eager for success, Russian peasant Vladimir Krestovsky leaves his wife Nataska and daughter Olga and goes to the United States. In just a few years, Vladimir moves from steel mill worker to financial magnate, and then, after changing his name to the more "American" sounding Krest, he marries into a socially prominent family. When his new wife dies, however, a suddenly reflective Vladimir has a vision of Christ and realizes that he has been consumed by his desire to make money and has turned his employees into virtual slaves. Vladimir vows to change his philosophy, after which Nataska and Olga, having arrived in America, find jobs in his plant. Vladimir finally recognizes them, and the family is reunited just as he institutes a series of reforms to help his workers.
