Biography

Earning a big break in Hollywood almost always involves mentoring or support from someone who is already established. In the case of Janet Waldo, it came in the form of actor-singer Bing Crosby, who invited the Yakima, Washington native out to California after she won a talent contest he had sponsored. A large part of Waldo's career was voiceover work, beginning with Cecil B. DeMille's "Lux Radio Theater" (CBS/NBC Radio 1934-1955) and continuing on to the 1960s TV series "The Jetsons" (ABC 1962 -63), for which she played the role of Judy. On the radio, she was also, for eight years, Corliss Archer, the bubbly teenage star of the CBS series "Meet Corliss Archer" (1943-1956), although she was bypassed in favor of Shirley Temple for the feature film spinoffs. By the time Waldo retired at the turn of the new millennium, she had added a whole range of voice work credits to her long, illustrious career in that field, including Mrs. Slaghoople in "The Flintstones" (ABC 1960-66), Mrs. Tobbis in "King of the Hill" (Fox 1997-2010), and Shanna the She-Devil on "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends" (NBC 1981-83). Janet Waldo Lee, as she was credited in her later years, died on June 12, 2016 at the age of 96 of undisclosed natural causes.
