Horse thief Davey "The Kid" Duncan challenges the authority of Pascal, the leader of his gang, shortly after an unsuccessful raid, but soon backs down because he does not want to hurt his friend. Davey, Pascal and their partner, Freshwater, join up with another gang led by Tronco, but they are disgusted when Tronco attacks some Indians in addition to stealing their herd. Davey asks Tronco to give him a white colt in exchange for his cut, but when Tronco refuses, Davey shoots him in the hand. Davey, Pascal and Freshwater escape with the foal, and Tronco vows revenge. Over the next five years, Tronco arranges for all of his raids to be blamed on Davey, who thereby develops a lengthy criminal record. One day, Davey, Pascal and Freshwater are summoned to the mountains by fellow horse thief Benson. There Davey recognizes his white stallion Thunder's mate and foals, among a herd of horses, and sends Thunder to rejoin his family. Benson is also working with Tronco, who barely disguises his loathing for Davey. Benson hires the rustlers to raid a herd belonging to the local Indians, and proudly shows them his black stallion Black Jack. Benson uses Black Jack to lead the herds astray, then sends in his vicious dogs, who make it appear as if the herd ran off because of wolf attacks. When Davey's horse goes lame, he is caught stealing another horse by Jan Walton, who runs her invalid father's horse ranch. Jan allows Davey to borrow the horse because of his honest face, and because her dog, Captain Boots, immediately takes a liking to him. Jan later discovers a wanted poster for Davey and decides not to tell the sheriff. One day, Benson finds Davey visiting with Jan and later tells Pascal and Freshwater to raid her herd. Jan, meanwhile, has confronted Davey and, after learning that he became a horse thief while trying to clear his brother of a trumped-up charge, extracts a promise that he will not steal from her. After learning of Benson's plans, Davey warns Jan to keep Captain locked up, fearing that the dog will be killed by Benson's animals, and also warns Thunder about Benson's dangerous black stallion. That night, Benson's dogs attack Thunder's herd, but the horse and Davey fight them off, as Pascal and Freshwater steal the herd. Jan accuses Davey of breaking his promise, but agrees to wait three hours before she calls the sheriff. Davey decides to quit rustling for good, and warns Pascal that he is returning Jan's herd. Pascal and Freshwater, in turn, inform Benson that Davey is double-crossing him. Davey returns Jan's horses, and she helps him hide when Benson, Tronco and his pals come after him. Jan sends the gang the wrong way, but Benson doubles back and vows to get Davey "just as he did his brother." When Davey stands up, Benson fires at him, and Davey kills him in self-defense, thereby fulfilling his promise to avenge his brother. Tronco vows to get even for Benson's death, but Davey has already ridden into the hills. Pascal and Freshwater now decide to help their friend, and hold off Tronco's gang to even the odds between Tronco and Davey. After Davey shoots Tronco, who falls off a cliff to his death, Pascal tells Davey that he can be boss from now on. Having promised that he and his friends will surrender and pay their debt to society, Davey bids Jan farewell.
