Synopsis
Peter Strange fails his university examinations in philosophy and joins the London Metropolitan Police Force. Serving in the same district is Detective Sergeant Pierce, an embittered man obsessed with obtaining the conviction of Quince, a former policeman now involved in drug peddling. On a tip from informer Charley Small, Pierce goes to the heliport where Quince and his two sons are scheduled to receive a consignment of stolen drugs. Pierce is astonished to observe one of his superiors, Inspector Evans, warning the Quinces that the police are present. Despite Pierce's efforts to catch Evans receiving a pay-off, Evans is cleared after an investigation, and Charley is killed by Quince. Meanwhile, Peter has become involved with a wild teenaged girl who calls herself Fred and is unaware that their lovemaking is being secretly filmed by her aunt and uncle, who deal in pornographic photographs. The next day, the Quinces brutally attack Peter and drive an electric drill through his cheeks. Pierce's frustration at Peter's inability to identify his assailants multiplies when the Quinces use bribed witnesses to absolve themselves of Charley's murder. Consequently, when the pornographic pictures of Peter and Fred accidentally fall into Pierce's hands, he uses them to blackmail Peter into planting drugs on Quince. At the resulting trial, however, Pierce's method of obtaining the Quinces' arrest is exposed, the case against the criminals is dropped, and Peter is sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for conspiring to obstruct justice and corrupt public morals.
