Synopsis

Dr. Simon Sparrow and the interns and nurses of London's General Hospital are amazed when the usually gruff and eccentric head surgeon, Sir Lancelot Spratt, suddenly becomes courteous and kind. A slipped disc has caused Sir Lancelot to become a patient in his own hospital, and during the course of his treatment he has fallen in love with Iris, his physiotherapist. He seeks advice on courtship from Sparrow, who tells him to diet, visit a health clinic, and, later, be fitted for a corset. Meanwhile Sparrow becomes enamored of Delia, a patient who is both a model and aspiring actress. Sparrow has a brief affair with Sonja, a masseuse, while Delia is making a film in Rome. Sir Lancelot eventually proposes to Iris, but she gently turns him down in favor of a patient, Major Ffrench. Sir Lancelot takes comfort in the thought that his habits will not be changed, and the hospital atmosphere returns to normal as Sparrow welcomes Delia on her return.
