Synopsis

In the Sudan of the 1880's, the Mahdi (Mohammed Ahmed), mystical ruler of the Moslems, rallies his forces in an effort to stamp out British influence and General "Chinese" Gordon's attempts to abolish the slave trade. When the Moslems attack Barash, a British outpost 200 miles upriver from Khartum, four people escape in a riverboat: Richard Baker, a tough, unconventional trooper; Murchison, an inexperienced, bumbling subaltern; Margaret Woodville, a prim English governess; and Asua, a young native girl in the governess' charge. Baker's unorthodox methods put him in conflict with Murchison and Miss Woodville, but after surviving numerous perils, including attacks by Moslems, slave traders, unfriendly natives, elephants, and crocodiles, the four reach safety. The mutual dislike of Baker and Miss Woodville in the meantime has given way to love.
