Synopsis

In pre-World War II Algiers, Arthur Meursault, a French clerk, learns of his mother's death; he attends the funeral but feels removed from grief, conscious only of the blinding sun. Upon returning to Algiers after the burial, he resumes the drab ritual of his daily life. He meets and spends the day with Marie Cardona; he testifies for a procurer, Raymond, who has been arrested for beating a young Arab girl; and he spends a weekend with Marie, Raymond, and a married couple. None of these relationships impinge on Meursault's solitude or his devotion to simple pleasures. One day he sets out for a walk alone on the beach and is startled by the Arab girl's brother, who earlier that day stabbed Raymond. Gradually Meursault becomes hypnotized by the sun's rays and fires five bullets into the boy. Brought to trial, Meursault slowly realizes that his refusal to indulge in social hypocrisy has condemned him, and he is sentenced to be guillotined. Back in his cell, Meursault rejects the consoling last words of a priest and accepts the inevitability of death.
