This film got tangled up in the collapse of the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group. For its 1992 theatrical release, Friedkin eliminated a subplot involving the prosecuting attorney's troubled marriage. Another substantial change is that in the 1987 version Charles Reece (Alex McArthur) dies in prison; in the 1992 version, he lives, and remains eligible for parole.
