Synopsis

Stanley Redfield, defense lawyer for racketeer Nate Girard, who has been accused of murdering a man named Cusick, is murdered during a press party held to celebrate Girard's acquittal. Among the suspects are two newspapermen, Phil Doane and I. B. McGoogin, and Meg Archer, a mysterious woman who appeared in town shortly after Girard's release. Free from suspicion is ace news photographer Kent Murdock, who was in a nearby apartment arguing with his showgirl fiancéé, Hester Boone, when the murder took place. In the chaos immediately following the shooting, Meg slips out and hides in Murdock's shower. Murdock believes in her innocence and protects her from police inspector Bacon. Murdock further complicates his involvement by helping McGoogin and Doane conceal a piece of evidence--a photographic plate that reveals the murderer. Murdock doubts Meg when he discovers she accepted money from Girard but, as he is now in love with her, helps her to escape while disguised as Hester. Later, McGoogin is killed attempting to develop the plate, and Meg is a suspect again. When an attempt is made on her life, the police let Murdock believe she has committed suicide. Still determined to prove her innocence, Murdock trails Girard and his new assistant, who turns out to be Joe Cusick, the vengeful brother of the victim, who knows that Girard actually did commit the murder. Murdock almost shoots Girard, but Inspector Bacon intercedes and kills Girard as he pulls a gun on Murdock. Meg is freed, and with Murdock's help, turns in Cusick, who has been identified as the murderer of Redfield and McGoogin. Meg and Murdock collect a reward for finding the killer, pay off Hester, who had accused Murdock of breach of promise, and contemplate married life.
