Synopsis
In the midst of an aerial bombing, David and Joan Bannister are married in Europe. David, a famous war correspondent, insists that they return to the safety of the United States, but Joan convinces him to continue covering the war. Finally, David decides to return to America with Joan, but their transport is sunk by a German submarine. Their lifeboat is discovered by the Coast Guard, much to the relief of David's good friend, taxicab driver Mike Reese. Later, David and Joan move into his apartment in New York, and he becomes a radio columnist, using the banner "Wake Up, America." The two have their first fight when they make different dinner plans for the same night: David with his old friend, Lt. Cmdr. Bill "Grumpy" Drake of U.S. Naval Intelligence, and Joan with her chum, Alicia Rolf. Later, David exposes the German background of financier Harrison K. Woods, an associate of Alicia, who is actually a German spy. Afraid that Woods's exposure may lead to his spy ring, Peter, Alicia's superior, kills Woods in cold blood. When David becomes suspicious of Joan as well, Bill tries to ease his doubts. David, however, discovers that Bill and Joan were once romantically involved, so he discounts his friend's advice. Later, David receives a coded message that there has been an enemy bombing of the West Coast, which is soon followed by a similar message to Joan. Suspecting that Joan may be cheating on him, David takes Mike and follows Joan to her secret meeting with Carl Gordon, whom David recognizes from their sunken transport. The jealous David then checks into a cheap hotel and sends a telegram to Joan, stating that he has been sent on assignment to Washington, D.C. With David in hiding, Mike follows Joan throughout the city, including her meeting with Bill. The next day, Bill is found dead in his hotel room, and radio reporters speculate that he was killed by a spy ring. Mike then takes David to Martin's Bookstore, which turns out to be the spy ring's headquarters. Knowing that her husband will follow her, Peter sends Joan to a secluded country home, where he has set a trap for David. As expected, the correspondent falls for the bait, but before Peter can shoot David and Mike, he is himself killed by an assassin's bullet. After being released by Winston, a caretaker, David calls Inspector Varden of the FBI to warn them about the spy ring, but he is told that the ring has already been broken. David then learns that both Joan and Carl are undercover agents for the FBI. After their reunion, Joan joins David on his next broadcast, where she calls on all Americans to do their part for the war effort.
