Synopsis

In San Francisco, beautiful Linda Gray has been secretary to attorney Edward James "E. J." Barnes for five years. Linda is in love with E. J.'s nephew, notorious foreign-born playboy Jimmy Delaney Barnes, and E. J. believes that she is right for Jimmy. When E. J. dies, he disinherits Jimmy and leaves his $4 million fortune to Linda on condition that she use the money to reform Jimmy. Linda alarms Jimmy when she deliberately behaves as recklessly with the wealth as he once did. Alexander Duncan, who is in league with Linda, tells Jimmy he must wait for a witness to return before he can contest the will. With the Barnes and Duncan law firm disbanded, Jimmy is unemployed, and when he learns that Linda is spending all of her money, he follows her to New York, where she hires him as her secretary. Starlet Constance Marlowe follows Jimmy East, and on the airplane meets notorious fortune hunter Baron René de Montigny. Linda pretends to encourage René's attentions and pays for their entertainment. Later, Jimmy quits his job with Linda to go to work for Judge Reynolds. Although Duncan tells Linda she has made Jimmy into a man, she knows he hates her, and she has Duncan give him a fake will that proclaims him sole heir. Jimmy is too angry to pay attention to Duncan's news, however, because René is in Linda's apartment. When Jimmy finally comprehends the news, he withdraws the half-hearted marriage proposal he had made to separate Linda and René. René returns to Linda and although she has no money, he proposes to her, and she accepts. While applying for a marriage license, the couple is delayed and Jimmy rushes in and makes Linda realize that she loves him. René leaves alone, but meets an obese heiress on the way out.
