The Smurfs were created by Peyo and first published in "Le Journal de Spirou" on October 23, 1958.

Paramount bought the film rights to the characters intending to produce a trilogy of films.

Project was previously in development at Paramount Pictures.

Film was the first to receive financing through the Hemisphere Tentpole Co-Financing Fund and included an "ultimates" deal through which the amount of Hemisphere's investment is tied to the film's early box office performance.
