Based on the stage play "The Libertine" written by Stephen Jeffreys.

Project previously in development at J & M Entertainment.

John Malkovich starred in the Steppenwolf Theater Company's stage production of "The Libertine" in Chicago, early 1996.

Project is commercial director Laurence Dunomre's feature directing debut.

During pre-production in early-February 2004, the British government suddenly outlawed some of the U.K.'s biggest tax equity funds, which directly effected this project. Re-financing occurred, switching from First Choice to Isle of Man Film, and principle photography was moved from Bray Studios in London to the Isle of Man, and pushed from February 23 to March 3, 2004.

Mr. Mudd Productions is John Malkovich's production company.
