Synopsis

As screaming young fans jam the Manchester Airport to welcome Gerry and the Pacemakers back from an American tour, Gerry recalls the story of the group's first success: Living with Aunt Lil at her Liverpool boardinghouse, Gerry takes the ferry across the Mersey each day to attend art school with Chad, a member of his group, while Fred and Les, the other Pacemakers, cross the river to their factory jobs. At night, the four play and sing at The Cavern, a local nightclub. Gerry's girl friend Dodie persuades Hanson, an agent, to represent the boys in a competition to select a musical act to compete in the European Beat contest. On the day of the competition, the new instruments which the agent secured for the boys are delivered to the airport by mistake and, after a wild chase, are recovered by the foursome. Gerry and the Pacemakers are driven to the competition in a funeral hearse and win the contest. They have now achieved international fame.
