Film is a semi-autobiographical account of the relationship between novelist/filmmaker Jose Giovanni and his estranged father. When Giovanni was unjustly imprisoned and sentenced to death, his father fought for and eventually won his release from death row. Giovanni went on to become the best-selling author of such novels as "Le trou", "Classe tous risques" and "Le deuxieme souffle," all of which were adapted to film.
Jose Giovanni wrote the novel which director Jacques Becker adapted for his classic prison drama "Le Trou" (France/1959).
