Synopsis
The two American families introduced in the miniseries "North and South" -- the Hazards of Pennsylvania and the Mains of South Carolina -- are swept into the ferocious conflict and turbulent passions of the Civil War in this six-part, twelve-hour miniseries. The story plunges the Mains, South Carolina plantation owners, and the Hazards, Northern Industrialists, into the four fierce years of a nation divided against itself. Orry Main and George Hazard, once West Point classmates, proud officers in the war with Mexico, and partners in one of the South's first textile mills, now serve opposite sides. They lend their military knowledge to their former classmates -- Generals Grant, McClellan, Lee, Pickett, Jackson -- and their aid to the highest quarters -- Presidents Lincoln and Davis.
Capture by the enemy throws George into the unspeakable inhumanity of the South's Libby Prison and puts the depth of his and Orry's bond to a supreme trial. George's younger brother, Billy Hazard, and Orry's young cousin, Charles Main, who followed in their West Point footsteps and now daily live the war's unceasing horror, meet face-to-face in battle -- friend against friend, the war's ultimate tragedy.
The long four years from Sumter to Appomattox test and transform every member of these two American families. When the war is over, old friends are reunited in sorrow and hope, and life will begin again.
