Synopsis
Tinselly eight-hour miniseries based on Judith Krantz's best-selling romantic novel of, as the publicity releases heralded, "a young woman's struggle to preserve her father's magazine empire against treachery from within, set against the glamorous, exciting and powerful world of New York magazine publishing."
Valerie Bertinelli is the headstrong young heiress, Barry Bostwick is her ambitious father, Perry King her evil uncle, Jack Scalia the first of her three husbands, and Barbara Barrie and Fritz Weaver her grandparents. British actress Francesca Annis, as Bostwick's wife, here made her American television debut, and Katharine Houghton, Katharine Hepburn's niece who had made a smashing debut with Hepburn, Tracy and Poitier in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and then virtually faded from the movie scene, here makes her television mini-series debut as a society matron and friend of the publishing Ambervilles.
Most critics turned thumbs down on this splashy drama that had two directors (Richard Michaels left in mid production with a heart attack) and two writers -- each taking four hours. The Hollywood Reporter, for instance, felt that "there's more acting in a 20-minute army training film than in this four-night siege."
