Synopsis
Two 12-year-old girls are best friends and growing up in Percaucus, New Jersey. One loves ballet and baseball, the other loves history and politics. Frankie will audition for the coveted City Ballet scholarship, and Hazel will run for mayor.
Finding no age restrictions in the city charter and driven by her sincere desire to make her hometown a better place in which to live, Hazel takes on Mayor Harrison who has served undefeated for 28 years.
Meanwhile, Frankie is a gifted dancer who has practiced ballet her whole life. And with the big audition just weeks away, she has little time for anything else. Although she loves to dance, Frankie wants other things, too. She has an affinity for baseball and is encouraged by Hazel to try out for the all-boy Little League team. When she proves she has what it takes to hold her own, the coach begrudgingly accepts her onto the team. This is all unbeknownst to wedding consultant Phoebe Harkness, Frankie's beloved grandmother and guardian. As Frankie plays more ball, she dances less and her schoolwork begins to suffer. Frankie is worried that she won't be able to live up to her grandmother's expectations and knows it would break her heart if she found out she was jeopardizing her future as a dancer. A conflict between an important game and the dance audition brings matters to a head.
