Biography
After more than fifteen years as a working actor, Efrain Figueroa delivered a breakthrough screen performance as the abusive father in Miguel Arteta's acclaimed indie "Star Maps" (1997). Compact and beefy, the Hispanic actor made his film debut in a bit role in "Ragtime" (1981) and subsequently worked as a voice recordist on such features as "Death Becomes Her" (1992) and "Phenomenon" (1996). Figueroa has acted in guest appearances on such series as "Walker, Texas Ranger" (in a recurring role), "Dallas" and "Murder, She Wrote" as well as a regular on the short-lived police drama "Houston Knights" (CBS, 1987-88). He garnered critical notice for his appearance in the HBO special "Cosmic Slop" (1994).
An accomplished author, Figueroa has also been active in theater, earning awards for his bilingual performance in "La Chunga" (1995), and in writing, producing and directing corporate films in both Spanish and English. But it was his searing portrait of ambition and hair-trigger anger in "Star Maps" that finally made filmgoers take note of the actor, making the manipulative and brutal patriarch of an Hispanic family in Southern California who forces his youngest son into a life of prostitution a full-blooded character.
