Synopsis

Bonnie Blair and Philip Henderson, two young people who do not know each other, are admiring a jewelry store window when, suddenly, the store is robbed. In the confusion, the thieves slip some jewelry into Bonnie's and Philip's pockets, and the couple are arrested and convicted of robbery, despite their declarations of innocence. They are sentenced to two years in prison, and after eighteen months, are released for good behavior. They meet on the train to the city, and Philip tells Bonnie that his cellmate, Danny Hinkel, believes that they were set up by Sparkler, a tough gang leader for whom Danny worked. Danny warned Philip to avoid Sparkler, however, so they resolve to forget the past and make the best of the future. Her parents are delighted when Bonnie returns home, but her scheming sister Mae tells her that she has disgraced the family and that if she stays, Mae will have no hope of getting married. Bonnie bitterly agrees to leave, and after reassuring her parents that she will be okay, Bonnie moves into Mrs. Abernathy's boardinghouse. Bonnie has difficulty finding a job, as she has no references, but eventually gets a job in a department store. She contacts Philip, who is having similar problems, and as the weeks pass, the youngsters fall in love. Philip gets a job through one of Bonnie's friends, and after he has saved some money, asks Bonnie to marry him. She happily accepts, but their troubles begins again when Philip's employer finds out that he is an ex-convict and fires him. Later, Bonnie is at work when she mistakenly thinks the store detectives are watching her. She panics and flees to Philip, who tells her that they will move to escape their past. That night, Danny, who has been released from prison, visits them and tells them that even though it is dangerous, the only way they will clear themselves is to prove that Sparkler and his gang are the real criminals. The next day, Philip and Bonnie go to Sparkler's hideout and convince him to hire them. Two of Sparkler's gang, Ratty and Fingie, recognize them from before and plot with Sparkler to set them up again. Sparkler makes an anonymous call to the police inspector, informing him of an upcoming jewelry robbery, but the inspector is suspicious and instead believes Philip and Bonnie when they tell him their story. He tells them that the police will back them up, but on the night of the robbery, the police do not appear. Ratty and Fingie, who deserted the pair during the robbery in order to set them up, are upset when they read a newspaper story the next day about the successful robbery. They go with Sparkler to Philip and Bonnie's boardinghouse to retrieve the jewelry, and while they are taking it, the police arrive and arrest them. Philip and Bonnie are cleared, and they begin their married life with a clean slate.
