Synopsis
Unknown to Grover Cromwell, the president of Cromwell Investment Corporation, his two underlings, Graham Gaines and Osborne, arrange an investment pyramid scheme through which they stand to make nine million dollars. Because District Attorney Avery Henderson learns of the scheme, Gaines pays Christopher Bruno, president of the Continental Importing and Exporting Company, which supplies speakeasies with liquor, to arrange for Henderson's murder. Henderson receives a phone call from Carlotta Lamont, who identifies herself as the sweetheart of Harley Kemp, the government examiner who was paid to falsify statements of Suburban Utilities, a Cromwell subsidiary. Henderson is then killed in her hotel room by hired gunman Ramon Salvadore. The murder becomes a scandal when "witnesses" testify that Henderson's redheaded mistress shot him. Henderson's friends, roommates Andy Terrell, a hard-nosed, woman-chasing reporter, and Lionel Houston, who has become the new district attorney and who is engaged to Cromwell's daughter Diane, break the news to Henderson's wife Evelyn. After Lionel confronts Cromwell and Gaines with evidence implicating Kemp in the scheme, Gaines calls Bruno again, but Lionel escapes unharmed when a truck collides with his car. When Lionel receives Kemp's suicide note and confession, he accuses Cromwell. Diane, siding with her furious father, tells Lionel to leave. When Andy attempts to seduce Carlotta, who is mistress to both Salvadore and Bruno, he is captured and induced by Salvadore and Bruno to lure Lionel to their apartment. Suspicious of Andy's call, Lionel arrives with the police, who kill Salvadore and capture Bruno and Carlotta. Meanwhile, when Cromwell learns of the pyramiding scheme, he drives himself and Gaines into the path of a speeding train. Henderson is exonerated, and Lionel and Diane marry.
