Synopsis
Melanie Flood learns that her husband Steve's lack of attention is attributable to his heavy losses in racetrack betting, and she persuades his law partner, Clint Morgan, to help her become Steve's bookie. (Under that arrangement the money will at least remain in the family.) The plan backfires, however, when Steve's luck changes; and Melanie is forced to sell her diamonds and antiques in order to pay his winnings. Steve then persuades his friends to place their bets through him, and Melanie's losses mount. The mysterious appearance of this new bookie arouses the curiosity of both Steve and his pals and also of Tony Gagoots, the syndicate boss. All trails lead to the Floods' apartment, and Melanie is forced to confess. When Steve discovers that Tony's singer girl friend, Saturday Knight, could turn the gangster over to the authorities, Steve suggests that Tony marry her to prevent her from testifying against him. Tony agrees, and Steve charges him $18,000 for legal advice--the exact amount needed to cover Melanie's bookie debts.
