Synopsis
Sheriff Cal Webster posts a wanted poster authorizing a $5,000 reward for the capture of the bandit Serge Karloff, dead or alive. He then writes a $5,040 check for Dan Savage and Dan's buddies, July and Bob, for services rendered. Dan uses the check to pay off their debt at the bank, but Bob purchases a bracelet for his girl friend and rides out of town to see her. He is followed by one of Karloff's bandits. Karloff and his gang hold Bob captive and send a note to Dan threatening to kill Bob by sundown if Dan does not bring $5,000 ransom. The bank refuses to lend Dan the cash, so he robs them, and he and July rush to Karloff's camp. They arrive too late, however, and mourn beside Bob's grave. Dan and July return the money to the bank, but are arrested anyway. While in jail, they meet one of Karloff's bandits who, hearing of their robbery, assures them that Karloff will bust them out of jail that night along with him. Dan and July leave with Karloff's gang using assumed names and ride south of the border to a Mexican saloon. Karloff is infatuated with Carmelita, a dancer at the saloon who used to be Bob's girl friend. Karloff brands Dan and July as a test of their loyalty. Later, Dan and Carmelita talk privately and he tells her of Bob's death. In the next three weeks, Karloff loses seven men on outings because Dan and July sabotage each one. One night July rides to Cal Webster and advises him that Dan will lead the Karloff gang back across the border at four o'clock. At the saloon, Dan starts to confess to Karloff, but Karloff's informant tells him first. Carmelita seduces Karloff and holds him at gunpoint until his men release Dan. Dan rides out of town with Karloff's men in pursuit. Cal's posse awaits as they cross the border and arrests Karloff's gang. Karloff escapes and rides back to the saloon where he and Dan struggle. July shoots Karloff just in time to save Dan.
