Synopsis

Following his discharge from the Navy, Pat Hubbard, the son of a once-famous country music singer, stops off in Hollywood en route to his Arizona ranch. While there, he attends a Hollywood Bowl performance by Faron Young and is induced to play a country and western number. His singing attracts the attention of agent Mike Evans and fan magazine writer Maggie Hendricks, who follow him to Arizona in the hope of persuading him to become a professional singer. Pat is reluctant to enter show business because of the ruinous effect it had upon his father's personal life. During their stay at the ranch, Maggie falls in love with Pat, and Mike becomes romantically involved with Pat's sister Beth. Eventually, under the protective guidance of Tex Ritter and Al Hirt, Pat is launched into a promising career. Complications arise when an article Maggie has written on Pat's father appears in a national magazine. Furious, Pat breaks up with Maggie and decides to return to being a cattle auctioneer. Pat feels obligated to perform, however, when he is asked to do a show for the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. Maggie and Mike learn about the special performance, and the two couples are reconciled as Pat sings a patriotic number on the carrier's flight deck.
