Synopsis
When the Masters family pulls away from the main wagon train to rest, they are attacked by Indians. The other settlers ride to the rescue, but the Masters are killed, and their daughter Gail is stolen by Gray Dust, an Indian woman. Only the infant Ken is recovered by the settlers, and one, Jed, vows to rear him. Before he dies, Masters tells Jed that each of the children has half of a map to a gold mine tattooed on their arms. Years later, Jed declines the request of marshal Bat Mannning to accompany him on a search for a gang of desperadoes led by a golden-haired girl called "Goldie." Ken, now a young man, and his friends, Cookie and Hawhaw, go undercover as members of a medicine show. During the performance, Ken sings, does rope tricks, and introduces his horse, Tarzan. When two bullies, Link and Steve, step on the foot of little Peewee Harper, Ken comes to his defense. Ken escorts Peewee and his big sister Mary home and makes a date with Mary. Link overhears Cookie and Hawhaw mention their real mission, and returns to Goldie's cantina to report the suspicious medicine show. That evening, while investigating a rustling in a nearby town, Ken is captured by Goldie's gang, and taken to the cantina. Link notices Ken's tattoo, so similar to one on Goldie's arm, and realizes that Ken and Goldie are brother and sister. However, when Link sees Goldie in the arms of another man, he decides to have Ken killed. While searching for Ken, Mary and Peewee are led by Goldie's henchman, Glenn, to the cantina and made prisoners. Link tricks Goldie into ordering Ken's execution, after which he plans to take over the gang and secure Mary for himself. However, Peewee slips through the bars of the window and manages to take a message to Cookie. After Ken escapes, Gray Dust recognizes Ken's tattoo and prevents Goldie from shooting him. Ken and Goldie become allies in a shootout with her gang, but she is killed by Link. Later, Peewee lassos Ken and Mary together, and Ken winks at the little boy.

According to Variety, Western Frontier was Ken Maynard's first picture for Columbia. According to modern sources, the cast also included Tom Harris, Frank Ellis, Art Mix, Slim Whitaker, William Gould, Dick Curtis, Budd Buster, Herman Hack, Horace B. Carpenter and Oscar Gahan.
