Synopsis

At a café, Gallagher Construction Company Foreman Ernie Reardon tells waitress Peg Mallory that he has recently walked off the job and is leaving for San Francisco on the next bus. When Ernie asks her about her date the night before with the company's superintendent, William O'Hara, Peg spills food on a customer and is fired from her job. Outside, she decides to sneak onto the bus for San Francisco, but mistakenly boards the bus returning to the construction site and immediately falls asleep in the back seat. When Ernie's co-workers arrive in town, he buys them all drinks and leads them onto the bus heading for the site where the company is constructing a bridge. When the bus arrives at the site, Peg realizes that she is now stranded. When O'Hara learns that a storm is headed their way, the men must work all night until the bridge is completed so that people living in the valley will be able to escape. As Peg climbs the scaffolding to serve the men coffee, Ernie prevents her from falling to her death. When O'Hara sees Peg in Ernie's arms, he becomes jealous and orders her down from the scaffolding. The next day, Peg prepares to leave when one of the contruction workers, Ramsey, informs O'Hara that the roads have been washed out, leaving them all stranded. The men frantically assemble a makeshift bridge, when a worker named Slim gets his foot caught in a beam. O'Hara attempts a daring rescue, but Slim falls to his death. Despite exhaustion and their grief over Slim's death, the men continue working on the bridge. Ramsey then phones to say that flood waters have washed away part of the levee. A short time later, a Red Cross worker phones, saying that evacuees are on their way up to the bridge, and Peg and Wing, the cook, help all of the evacuees to safety. The next morning, as Ernie prepares to leave, O'Hara proposes marriage to Peg, but she declines. Peg then goes out to her waiting cab while Ernie and O'Hara fight over her inside. O'Hara knocks Ernie unconscious and places him in the backseat of Peg's cab, saying that that is where he belongs.
