Synopsis

Amateur sportsman Tim Dale, the general manager of the Consolidated Telephone Company and son of the company head, resigns after being criticized by the board of directors for sacrificing a cable to save a workman's life. He joins a polo tour, and when an opponent is hurt in a match, Tim repairs the telephone lines to Riverton in order to reach the hospital, thereby exposing the incompetence of maintainance chief Matthews. John Robinson, president of the Riverton company, and his daughter Barbara offer Tim a position, but are refused. However, Tim finally agrees after hearing the news that a gang, led by engineer Jackson, has destroyed the lines at Tyler Junction. Tim first recruits a group of "trouble shooters," who are sent on emergency jobs to the lines. At Tyler Junction, he poses as Tim Allen, but his disguise is easily penetrated by Barbara. Tim suspects that Benton, a crooked lawyer, is using Matthews to force Riverton to lose its franchise, so that he can then sell it to Consolidated for a huge profit. Tim catches Jackson and Matthews trying to break the new cables as they are swung over Devil's Gulch, but they escape after Jackson fights Tim in a car that is slipping off a precipice. Benton kidnaps Barbara to further disrupt the franchise, and she overhears Benton's plan to create chaos by dynamiting the towm dam during an upcoming storm. Jackson is captured and reveals Barbara's hiding place. Benton, escaping, is hit and killed by a falling pole, while his henchmen are captured and Barbara is freed. Finally, Riverton and the community are saved from the storm, even though the gang has dynamited the dam. The Consolidated and Riverton companies merge, as do Tim and Barbara.

Notes

The working titles of this film were Storm at Midnight, Voice in the Dark and Headed For Trouble. Screen Achievements Bulletin credits Harvey Gates and Samuel Hoffenstein with the screenplay, however, this is the only source that mentioned Gates and Hoffenstein in connection with the film, and the extent of their contribution to the picture has not been determined. According to the pressbook background scenes were shot at Boulder Dam, Nevada (later called Hoover Dam), which doubled for "Devil's Gulch." The scene of the battle of the telephone linesmen was filmed in the Santa Susana Mountains near the San Fernando Valley, CA.
