Synopsis
Gail and Eve Redman have been married for six years but have had no luck conceiving a child. Eve, desperate for someone to take care of, invites visiting Viennese doctor and psychologist Dr. Nicholas Faber to stay at her home for the duration of his lecture series, assuming that he is elderly. When Nicholas and Eve meet, each is surprised that the other is young and attractive. After three weeks in Eve's house, Nicholas feels like a new man, but senses something in Eve's life is preventing her happiness. While strolling in the garden, Eve tells Nicholas she had her highest romantic experience at the age of sixteen when she walked among blooming laurels. Nicholas then speculates about Eve's first son, whom she will name Christian, and sings a lullaby to her. Overcome with emotion, Eve cries and confesses her inability to conceive. Near the end of his stay, Nicholas lectures on love, which causes Eve to run from the lecture hall and leave unexpectedly with Gail on a business trip. When Eve returns alone to say goodbye to Nicholas, he swears his love, and they walk among the laurels and make love. Two months later, Eve discovers she is pregnant. Seven years later, Gail decides it's time for their son Christian to jump fences on a horse. Although Eve insists Christian's disposition is more thoughtful than athletic, Gail aims to prove his son is not a coward and forces him to jump. The boy, terrified, falls off his horse before reaching the fence and becomes terribly ill. When he is well enough to walk, Christian sneaks out of the house to prove his courage to his father, and jumps successfully, but collapses. Eve then hears Nicholas over the radio from Chicago and calls him to come at once. For days the boy is in a stupor, displaying little emotion exept for animosity toward Gail. Nicholas then realizes Christian is his son and urges Eve to recall what made Christian happy as a baby. When she sings Nicholas' lullaby, Christian recovers. Nicholas asks Eve to run away with him and Christian, but Eve knows it would destroy Gail to have waited years for a son only to find out he is not his. As Eve watches Nicholas drive away, Christian and Gail embrace her at the window.
