Synopsis

Mail riders Wade Benson and Ed Randolph decide to seek jobs with the expanding East-West stage line. Along with their friend, lawyer Cyril "Si" Dugan, they save Bob Courtney, the Eastern representative of East-West, from a band of highwaymen, and Wade is hired to head up the road construction for a new stagecoach line through East-West's territory. After Wade puts Ed in charge of one of the relay stations, Ed is mortally wounded in a raid led by outlaw Smokey Dawson. Before he dies, however, Ed rides to the construction camp and names his murderer. Wade then rides into town and avenges his friend's death by killing Dawson in a gunfight. At the same time, Ed's sister Kay arrives in town and is told that Wade caused her brother's death. Later, Si helps Wade acquire extra construction workers by convincing Judge Higgins to hire out his prisoners to the stage line. In order to delay the road's construction and gain the government mail contract for himself, banker Seth Larkin has his henchman, Duke Merrick, open up a tent saloon next to the construction camp. Wade accuses Bob of slowing down the construction on the almost-completed road, but the Easterner comes to Wade's defense when he tussles with Duke. After Duke convinces the construction workers to go on strike until they have received their wages, Kay overhears Duke ordering his henchman to stop Bob from bringing the payroll to the construction camp, while warning them not to kill Bob as Dawson killed Ed. Before Kay can warn Si about the planned robbery, Inspector Talbot of the postal department arrives by stagecoach for a test run. Wade and Bob then fight over what they should do, only to be told by Kay about Duke's plot. With the road unfinished, Wade agrees to complete the test run by driving the stagecoach through a dry wash. Duke and his men try to stop the stagecoach, but they are turned away by Bob and the other construction workers. The stage successfully completes its test run, and Larkin, Duke and their men are arrested. Wade is then made general manager of the stage line, and he and Kay are reconciled.
