Synopsis

Tamahine, the 17-year-old half-Polynesian daughter of an English anthropologist, travels to England when her father dies. She is to visit Charles Poole, her father's cousin and the headmaster of Hallow, a noted boys' school. Tamahine's Polynesian ways disrupt order at the school among students and teachers alike. At the sports day she wins all the races and climbs the clock tower in her underwear to place a chamber pot at the top. Poole's son Richard falls in love with and marries Tamahine. Several years pass, and Poole has been so influenced by Tamahine that he retires to her native island; Richard takes over as headmaster; and Tamahine, who has developed into a quiet, adoring wife, remains with him.
