Synopsis

Elderly millionaire Silas Wayne gathers his family members together to discuss their inheritance, knowing that in their greed they are anxious for him to die. When he discovers that an heirloom diamond kept in his safe is actually glass, he calls the police. Officers Ryan and Kelly arrive and sit in on his meeting. Just before Silas signs his will, he collapses, and the astonished family members and police discover that he has been stabbed. Detective Sergeant Mitchell investigates the murder, along with lovely newspaper reporter "Nosey" Toodles. While a shrouded figure roams the house terrifying Jeff, the butler, Mitchell and Nosey go over the contents of the unsigned will. Claude Wayne, Silas' nephew, is discovered bound and hanged. The fact that the noose is tied with a sailor's knot plants suspicion on Stephen Boulter, who is married to Sarah, Silas' niece, and who has a sailor's tattoo. Mitchell finds Miss Sheen, the housekeeper, removing a birth certificate from a hiding place, which indicates that Dr. Bailey, who had been treating Silas, was actually Silas' and Miss Sheen's son. Gloria Dryden, Robert Wayne's fiancée, is captured by the cloaked man and about to be killed when Mitchell comes to her rescue and reveals that the true killer is Bailey. Finally, it is determined that Bailey put a sleeping potion in Silas' drink and then stabbed him when he collapsed. Bailey also killed Claude because he knew of his heritage. Miss Sheen douses the lights and Bailey tries to escape, but when he jumps from the roof to the electrical pole, he is electrocuted and dies. Nosey prints the story, and Mitchell gets credit in print and in her heart.

Notes

Copyright records list the film as A Strange Adventure, and a Variety review calls the film Strange Adventure; however, a viewing print and a Hollywood Reporter production chart call the film The Wayne Murder Case. Although June Clyde's name appeared above the title on the screen, Regis Toomey was listed first in the cast credits. The production chart also credits Archie Stout with camera. Copyright records credit both Phil Whitman and Hampton Del Ruth with direction, while the screen credits list only Whitman.
