Synopsis

Recent high school graduate Helen Howard, who has left her Ohio home to find fame and fortune as an actress and thereby help her family, is found dead in New York. Unknown to the police, racketeer Nick Mantee disposed of her body after she was accidentally shot by cohort Benny Nordick during an argument over the crooked operation of his Blue Jay nightclub. Police lieutenant Williams and sergeant Tom Rainey fly to Ohio to break the news to Helen's parents and older sister Nancy and try to learn more about her background. Ruth Ames, one of Helen's friends, is able to give them a substantial lead. Later, however, Nancy becomes frustrated by the detectives' lack of progress and goes to New York to do her own investigation. Using the name Annette Hilton, Nancy signs with the same theatrical agency that Helen used, one that Nordick operates as a means for recruiting "hostesses" for his nightclub. Meanwhile, Mantee has blackmailed Nordick into accepting him as a partner. Williams and Rainey find Nancy working at the club and advise her to go home. After hostess Janet Winters gets drunk at a party for Central-American nightclub operator Barda, who is recruiting girls, she is cautioned by Nancy, who tells her about Helen's fate. Later, Nancy uncovers evidence which definitely establishes that Helen worked at the club, and meets with the detectives, but Williams tells her that he needs more proof. Meanwhile, Nordick informs Mantee that Janet has told him that Nancy revealed that her sister was killed in the club. When Nancy returns, Mantee decides to take her and Janet to Central America in Barda's private plane, but Barda asks how the trouble started. Mantee and Nordick then quarrel and reveal their involvement in Helen's death. Suddenly, Williams, Rainey and a police officer burst in and Nancy tells them that Mantee and Nordick have just admitted their guilt. When the mobsters claim that this is hearsay evidence, Barda plays back a recording of their confession on Nordick's wire recording machine. Williams then reveals that Barda is an undercover detective, and Mantee and Nordick are arrested. Rainey is then assigned to escort Nancy, with whom he is now romantically involved, back to Ohio, while Williams begins yet another missing girl case.
