Synopsis

During the final flying tests of the Sky Patrol graduation, instructor Tailspin Tommy Thompson has to knock out candidate Carter Meade, son of Colonel Meade, when he freezes during target practice. Carter has a phobia about shooting a gun, but his father expects him to follow in his footsteps, so Thompson covers for him and he graduates. Bainbridge, a weapons smuggler, is also watching to see what this new patrol will mean to his operations. While on patrol, Carter sees an unidentified amphibious plane and reports in. Unable to defend himself, Carter is shot down by Bainbridge, who is flying the plane. Recognizing Carter as the colonel's son, Bainbridge picks him up from the water and takes him prisoner. Meanwhile, Carter is presumed dead, and the Sky Patrol mounts a search for the amphibious plane. Acting on a tip, Thompson and Skeeter, the assistant instructor, find the warehouse where the plane is hidden. Suspecting that Carter is still alive, Thompson tracks the plane on its nighttime flight and discovers that its destination is a ship. Thompson and Skeeter pretend to be downed pilots to get on board. There Bainbridge recognizes them and locks them up with Carter. Monitoring the Sky Patrol radio, the smugglers know that their warehouse has been raided and that the colonel and his men are flying the smugglers' plane to the ship. In an attempt to destroy the smugglers' operation, Thompson sets up explosives to detonate in the hold, and the three prepare to jump ship. As one of the smugglers tries to prevent their escape, Carter shoots him, thus overcoming his phobia. Thompson and Skeeter then return to their commercial airline jobs, leaving Carter in charge of the Sky Patrol.
