The second narrative feature for acclaimed playwright and actor Sam Shepard who marked his feature directorial debut with "Far North" (USA/1988). Following the film's premiere at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, it was re-edited by Shepard.

Performers Bill Irwin and David Shiner (the former a member of Cirque du Soleil), who play the medicine show comedians, and the Red Clay Ramblers, who provide the medicine show's music, later teamed up for the 1993 Broadway hit "Fool Moon."

The final screen appearance for actor River Phoenix who died of a drug overdose in Los Angeles on October 31, 1993, at the age of 23.
