Synopsis
During World War II, a group of French resistance fighters, under the leadership of Cazal, stage a lightning raid on a German prison fortress in France to rescue 12 prisoners condemned to death. Following the success of their mission, the men discover that they have liberated an extra man. Unable to decide whether the extra man is a spy planted by the Nazis or merely a civilian prisoner, the men take him to their hideout in the hills. Upon discovering that he wears German boots and has no identification card, most of the men--particularly the outspoken Jean--decide that he should be killed. When they raid the local tax bureau, the men take the stranger along, and during the shooting, he saves the life of a child who wanders into the line of fire. Nevertheless, Cazal orders his loyal aide Thomas to take the man to the river and execute him; but when the stranger talks for the first time and honestly admits that he is a pacificist deserter, Thomas allows him to escape. During the night, he returns to warn the men that they are surrounded by the Germans. After Cazal has left to warn other resistance groups, the Germans close in and take several captives, including the extra man, to be hanged. All the other men are killed, but the stranger manages to escape.
