Synopsis
After Luigi, the operator of a pin-table saloon in London, comes to the aid of former girl friend Angele Abbé, who is resisting a sailor's advances, he arranges to rent one of his arcade's machines to Gerald and Barbara Gale for a party. When he delivers the machine, he invites Barbara to dinner at his apartment in the saloon and makes it clear that he is interested in her romantically. Meanwhile, Luigi's right-hand man Limpy, who has a club-foot and is inexperienced with women, has made a date with Angele, but she stands him up. When Luigi returns to the Gale house to pick up the machine, Gerald invites him to join a card game, which Luigi almost immediately recognizes as being crooked. He then tells Barbara that he loves her and she agrees to leave her husband. Later that day, when Luigi returns to the saloon, he sees Barbara running out of the back door, but is unable to catch her. Inside, he finds Angele's dead body. Afraid of being charged with Angele's murder, Luigi, with Limpy's help, attempts to dispose of the body, but they are both arrested. After Limpy informs police inspector Johnstone that Luigi and Angele were together for a year until Luigi discovered that she was seeing other men, Luigi then becomes the principal suspect. However, he escapes from the police and goes into hiding. Later, Johnstone phones Limpy and asks him to come to the saloon late at night. After Luigi gives Limpy a glove that Barbara had dropped at the murder scene and asks him to return it to her, he goes to Limpy's room and discovers the walls plastered with photos of both Angele and Barbara. Limpy, who is obsessed with Barbara, goes to her bedroom and attempts to blackmail her into caring for him, but a phone call from Johnstone stating that he is sending a car for her, interrupts him. Later, at the saloon, Johnstone recreates the circumstances of the murder with Barbara impersonating Angele and Limpy breaks down and confesses that he killed Angele. His name cleared, Luigi walks off with Barbara.
