Synopsis
Five young ex-army friends have turned an abandoned Pasadena restaurant, the Hut, into a sort of barracks apartment. The happy routine of their lives is suddenly disrupted when they take in a new member--Leo Mack, an unscrupulous would-be actor whose brother, Mitch, is one of the residents. Before long Leo not only has conned the young men out of money and clothing but has also made a secret deal with young Ursula Poe, a money-hungry carhop who hopes to marry one of the bachelors, Horace Tobey, whose mother is a millionaire. Though Leo expects to get a share of the profits if he helps Ursula catch her man, he is not above having an affair with the girl himself. He then takes up with Life magazine staffer Anne Perry and induces her to do a story on the Hut. Leo naturally receives most of the coverage (including a cover picture) and attracts an important agent and bids from the movie studios. Then, at a press party, his world collapses when Anne denounces him as a cad and Ursula, pregnant, threatens to expose him unless he marries her. Furthermore, the bachelors throw him out of the Hut and refuse to have anything more to do with him. Though Leo is on the threshold of fame, he has paid a high price.
