Synopsis

With election time rolling around in the unruly town of Red Mountain, Henry Daws, the current mayor, tells Tom Benner, the dishonest town boss, that he has decided to reject his crooked support. In turn, Benner orders his men to kill Daws in cold blood as he leaves Benner's saloon. Benner then decides to run Bullseye Johnson, the town character, for the vacant mayoral office. After his election, Bullseye's first political act is to replace Earl Duncan, the town marshal, with noted lawman Matt Conway. Upon his arrival in town, Matt immediately gets into a fistfight with Earl, who refuses to surrender his badge to the unarmed lawman. Another new arrival in Red Mountain is Carla Anderson, who is there to meet her brother Larry, who is driving a herd of cattle to Dodge City. Larry is informed that Benner now owns the water rights around Red Mountain, having recently purchased the Bar-W ranch, but the cowboy refuses to pay Benner's high rates or sell his cattle to him for half their value. Meanwhile, Tom outlaws the possession of firearms in Red Mountain, only to learn that Larry, Carla and their men are engaged in a gunfight at the Bar-W. Tom orders the cowboys back to their camp, then warns Benner that he needs to make his water more accessible to passing cattlemen. That night, Tom tells Larry to drive his cattle into town where they can legally be watered from the public troughs. Later, Matt and Bullseye take Otis Wade, the former owner of the Bar-W, to his old ranch, where they discover that Benner has illegally changed the boundaries to include a watering hole. Otis is killed by Benner's men right after he tells Matt and Bullseye that Benner has the original map to the township in his saloon's safe. Larry, however, is falsely accused of the murder by the real killers, having publicly threatened Otis' life earlier in the day. Disguised as a woman, Bullseye sneaks into Benner's office and acquires the township map, but he is captured by Benner and his men before he can make his escape. Earl then organizes a lynch mob, but they are stopped from killing Larry by Matt, his deputy Hank and Bullseye, who has escaped from Benner's office just in the nick of time. Bullseye then shows the townspeople the map, which proves Benner's dishonesty and rallies support around Matt. A posse is formed to go after Benner, who, along with his men, is attempting to stampede Larry's cattle. In the ensuing shootout, Benner and his men are captured, and Matt and Bullseye are later praised by the townspeople for their good work.
