Synopsis

Shortly after the end of the Civil War, Secret Service agent Steve Duncan hunts down an outlaw band that is sabotaging new telegraph lines in the western territories. The Secret Service suspects that the outlaws are headed by former medical student Lynn Braden, who, as a Confederate soldier, formed a guerrilla band that used similar tactics to wreck the Union's telegraph service during the war. Steve is ambushed by Sloper, the real leader of the bandits, who takes his horse and papers and leaves him for dead. Passing cowpoke Smiley Burnette rescues Steve and transports him to a trading post operated by Braden, who is now using the name Miller, and his daughter Ellen. The expert way in which Miller dresses his wounds rouses Steve's suspicions. Later, after performing a delicate operation on Johnny, a young orphan, Braden reveals his identity to Steve. Steve uncovers Sloper's connections to the outlaws, and Braden's innocence is confirmed. When Sloper's men attack another telegraph supply train, Steve and Miller join forces to defeat them, and during the ensuing fight, Sloper is killed.
