Synopsis

After Tom Hopkins sells his junk business, he moves in with his daughter, Molly Wallace, her husband Ed and their children Mary, George, Edna and Willie. Ed is a member of many lodges, including the "Whales." One evening, Whitney, the Grand Harpoon of the Whales, visits the lodge meeting and offers to sell Ed shares in a gold mine for $5,000. Molly begs Ed not to make the investment, which she believes is too expensive, but attracted by the chance to make money quickly, Ed mortgages their house and buys the shares. A short time later, Whitney calls Ed and announces that his first dividend of $1,000 is waiting for him. Soon the family is rich. Ed quits his job and the children put on airs. Mary affects a British accent and plans to elope; Edna runs around with a dissolute young man; George practices radio announcing; and Willie borrows money to buy gifts for the family's "French" maid. Molly is unhappy, however, and worries about the mortgage and her children. One day, the real Grand Harpoon arrives in town and unmasks Whitney as a fake and a confidence man. The Wallaces learn that their money came from their grandfather Tom, who wanted to learn how they would react to wealth. Ashamed of their behavior, everyone goes to work to help pay off the mortgage, and Tom now knows that his grandchildren are basically good people after all.
