Synopsis

In 1870, when the Texas Rangers are disbanded, politicians set up a new State Police that proves to be a corrupt force. Three members of the State Police try to arrest former Ranger Jimmy Wakely, but he outwits them and sends them back to headquarters, minus their pants and boots. Soon after, police commissioner Jed Brant asks his lawyer nephew, Vic Sanders, to come from the state capital to consult with him. Jed tells Vic that his old friend Jimmy has become an outlaw and is organizing other ex-Rangers to resist the State Police, which is supported by fees levied on ranchers. Hamen, one of the pantless trio, tells Vic that Jimmy is driving off ranchers' stock and accusing the State Police of doing it. Vic's fiancée Sheila is one of Jimmy's supporters, and Vic finds it hard to believe that Jimmy has turned outlaw. Capt. Barton, Brant's crooked second-in-command, plots with Hamen to further incriminate Jimmy and releases two ex-Rangers from jail and frames them for running off Sheila's horses. Hamen shoots both Rangers, killing one of them, whom Sheila identifies as an ex-Ranger. Vic becomes more convinced that Jimmy might be involved, but when he finds him at a hideout they knew as children, Jimmy denies it. Hamen is tracking the other ex-Ranger he wounded but Jimmy and his sidekick "Cannonball" find the wounded man in time for him to tell them details of the raid before he dies. Jimmy then captures Hamen and secures a written confession from him that implicates Barton. When Jimmy takes Hamen to see Brant and shows him the confession, Brant is appalled to learn that his own men have been involved. In the adjoining office, Barton overhears the conversation, enters and shoots Brant. Before he dies, however, Brant slips the confession into a holster that is hanging on the wall. With Cannonball's help, Jimmy escapes, but Barton tells Vic that Jimmy has killed his uncle. Jimmy tells Sheila that they have lost the confession and that he will probably be blamed for Brant's death. Sheila then goes to see Vic, who shows her a "Wanted" poster for Jimmy and refuses to believe what Sheila tells him about the confession. After Sheila arranges to meet Jimmy, Barton finds out and ambushes him. Jimmy is wounded but Sheila finds him and takes him to her ranch. Meanwhile, Vic straps on his uncle's gun belt to go after Jimmy and finds Hamen's confession in the holster. He says nothing to Barton and accompanies him to Sheila's ranch, but once there he assists Jimmy in a gunfight against Barton and his henchmen. Barton is finally arrested, after which the Texas Rangers are re-instated and Jimmy and his pals are invited to Vic and Sheila's wedding.
