Synopsis

Radio patrolman Tim Conlon and his partner, Bumps O'Neill, are making their rounds when they answer a call about a bank robbery. They succeed in capturing all of the criminals but two, Johnny Davis and Ace Boyle, whose identitites are unknown to Tim. Later, Tim meets attractive schoolteacher Helen Regan and impresses her with his diplomacy as he settles a domestic quarrel. Tim becomes friends with Helen, whose father Dan was a heroic police lieutenant. His career was ended by "Big Bill" Standish, a jewel thief who shot Dan in the leg as Dan was capturing him. One evening, Tim meets Dan while Helen goes out with Davis, whose criminal activities are also unknown to the Regans. Meanwhile, Standish escapes from prison and begins to carry out his vow of revenge against Dan. Under the name of Dr. Madison, Standish attends a costume ball, to which Helen and Davis also go. Davis is dressed as a fireman and does not remove his costume when he commits a jewelry store robbery masterminded by Standish. Tim and Bumps's radio picks up the conversation that is being transmitted by an overturned telephone in the jewelry store, but they arrive too late to catch Davis and the other culprits. Tim finds a fireman's button, however, and immediately suspects Davis when he finds a button missing from his costume. Helen refuses to listen to Tim's suspicions though, for she believes that he is merely jealous, and she grows angry at him when he arrests Davis. Soon after, Dan decides to have the operation that may restore his leg's mobility and waits with Helen for an ambulance to take them from the house to the hospital. After they are taken away, another ambulance arrives, and the suspicious neighbors alert the police. When Tim is notified, he realizes that the first ambulance must have been a fake sent by Standish. Desperate to save Helen and Dan, Tim releases Davis hoping that he will lead him to Standish's hideout. A thrashing from Tim convinces Davis to cooperate, and soon Tim and Bumps are on their way. They arrive in time to prevent Helen and Dan from being killed and to capture Standish. Later, Dan's operation proves so successful that he is restored to his job. Tim is promoted to sergeant for his bravery, and Helen happily promises to share his future honors.
