Synopsis

Following the Civil War, Texan Jud Calvert and his cowhands drive a herd of cattle north to Kansas and are met with animosity from the northern ranch owners, who fear that the market will be glutted with Texas beef. This hostility is fostered by Vic Landreau, a cattle broker and covert leader of a gang of outlaws. Outside of one town, Jud meets ranch owner Betty Ainsley after her horse is frightened by a snake and bolts and Jud saves her. Later, Jud and the boys are insulted by Landreau and his men, who are trying to provoke a fight. Jud recognizes Landreau as a former outlaw who had been run out of Texas, but Landreau denies the allegations. To rid themselves of the Texans, Landreau and his men rob a bank and frame Jud for the crime. Jud is caught by an angry mob and about to be hanged when the marshal intervenes and shoots down the noose. After escaping, Jud rides to Betty's ranch, and she reluctantly offers him refuge. When Betty sees Landreau's men rustling her cattle, she realizes that Jud is innocent. Landreau's men then kidnap Betty, and Jud comes to her rescue, killing Landreau in the ensuing fight. The townspeople are readying to lynch Jud for murder when Betty intervenes and convinces them of Jud's innocence. Once freed, Jud and his boys apprehend Landreau's gang.
