Synopsis

José Luis, an undertaker's assistant, is attracted to Carmen, the daughter of the local executioner, Amedeo. The couple decide to marry when Amedeo is awarded a new apartment; besides, Amedeo has already caught them in bed and Carmen is pregnant. Amedeo wishes to retire, but he must forfeit his new apartment if he retires from government service. Therefore José Luis reluctantly takes over his father-in-law's job, intending to resign at duty's first call. Several months later, José Luis is ordered to perform an execution on Majorca at Palma de Majorca. His first impulse is to resign, but he is dissuaded from resigning by Amedeo, who believes that the criminal will be reprieved because of the upcoming carnival, and by Carmen, who wants to enjoy a holiday at the vacation spot with her new baby. They all set off for a holiday, but the reprieve never comes through, and José Luis distastefully performs the grim task, later claiming to his family it will be his last, though Amedeo notes that that was his own reaction to his first execution.
