Synopsis
Stricken with a violent headache, Wesley Stuart, son of a wealthy New Orleans family, leaves the home of his fiancée, Susan, soon after they make love. Overcome by guilt, Susan goes to church, where she is brutally murdered as she makes her confession. Wesley, after a year-long drinking binge, becomes engaged again, this time to Kay Jensen, a nurse. She is soon murdered with an ax, and Wesley is held by police as the prime suspect. Agatha, Wesley's mother, sends for Bennett Moss, her son's doctor during the 13 years he was confined in a mental institution after he accidentally killed his brother Johnathan. Meanwhile, Wesley is released on bond and meets Angelle, a reporter. He takes her to a nightclub where a drunk recognizes him from a photo and intimidates him. Wesley beats the man brutally and is returned to jail, but Dr. Moss arrives and takes custody of his former patient. That night at the Stuart home, Wesley dreams about Angelle and awakens in a cold sweat. As Dr. Moss tries to find his patient, his hand is sliced off and he is murdered with a meat cleaver. Wesley, extremely agitated, visits Angelle and tries to become intimate. He affirms his innocence of the murders; and Angelle leaves to find Dr. Moss, who might be able to provide an alibi. Wesley is arrested by police, who believe that he has murdered Angelle. He persuades them to return with him to the family home. Arriving in time to prevent Angelle from being killed by Agatha, they learn that Agatha has murdered Wesley's girl friends as punishment for the death of Johnathan and the resulting suicide of her husband.
