Synopsis
In 1900, Jim "Nevada" Lacey and his sidekick, Cash Burridge, are escaping the law when they rescue Hettie Ide from her runaway buckboard. Later, in the town of Winthrope, they see a drunken rancher being cheated out of his ranch in a card game. Jim wins the ranch back, but it is too late, for the rancher has committed suicide, making Jim the new owner as he has the transfer of ownership. Now a rancher, Jim joins in a cattle drive with his neighbors, who include Ben Ide, Hettie's father, and Clem Dillon, who is opposed to Jim. Although the ranchers fear rustlers will attack their herd if they take a route too close to Mexico, this route is preferred because it is shorter. Hettie joins the drive, and all goes well until cowhands are mysteriously murdered. Everyone except Ben and Hettie becomes suspicious of Jim and insists he leave, which Jim does after arranging with Ben to sell his cattle. Later, Jim and Cash overhear Clem and Cawthorne, another rancher, plotting to kill everyone and take the herd to Mexico, and relay this information to Ben. The next morning when the rustlers attack, the ranchers are ready to shoot it out with them. Jim takes Clem hostage after the rest of the rustlers surrender, but a gunshot wound makes him weak and Jim passes out. Clem escapes only to be killed by the sheriff. Jim is cleared of all suspicion and he and Hettie plan to marry.

Notes
The opening title reads "Zane Grey's Nevada." According to a news item in Hollywood Reporter, some scenes were filmed on location at Big Bear, CA, where editor Jack Dennis, became ill with pneumonia. In 1927, Paramount released a film based on the same source, also entitled Nevada, which starred Gary Cooper and Thelma Todd and was directed by John Waters (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.3802). In 1944, RKO started its series of Zane Grey Westerns with Nevada, starring Robert Mitchum.
