Synopsis
David Scott, a Royal Air Force bomber pilot in World War II, is shot down and presumably killed in a mission over France. His friend, Quint Munroe, assumes command of the squadron and tells David's wife, Beth, of her husband's death. When Quint's reconnaissance flight over France confirms that the Germans are developing a V3 rocket in the Château de Charlon, the British commanders order its destruction with a specially developed bomb. Meanwhile, Quint has fallen in love with Beth, who was his girl friend before she married Scott. Reconnaissance reports indicate that the Germans are holding several hundred British prisoners of war, including Scott, in the château. Consequently, Quint formulates a plan whereby the first wave of bombers will merely breach the château's walls, allowing the prisoners to escape; Father Bellague, a priest working with the French resistance, conveys this information to the prisoners so they will be prepared. The raid is carried out successfully, but although many British prisoners escape, Scott is killed.
