Synopsis

In a smalltown high school, a clique led by Jordan Bates gets together regularly to smoke marijuana. The town's civic leaders are alarmed at the increasing use of marijuana among the young but flounder in their attempts to curtail the illegal activity. Phil Blake, an art teacher who opposes spying on the students, admits that he once tried marijuana. He tries to gain the confidence of Jerry Blackburn, a sensitive art student who has become sick from smoking a marijuana cigarette given to him by the clique he desperately wants to join. Phil's efforts to reach Jerry fail, however, and the next night the boy "borrows" Phil's car to attend a "Maryjane" party. The gathering is interrupted by the police, and Jordan, in his haste, dumps a package of marijuana in Phil's car before Jerry returns it to the teacher's house. Phil is arrested on charges of marijuana possession but is bailed out of jail by Ellie Holden, a teacher to whom he is attracted. He learns that Jordan is involved in selling marijuana, but his attempt to talk to the youth results in a scuffle. Jordan sends Jerry to deliver a package of fake "Acapulco Gold" to a group of young toughs. Phil learns of the fraud and sets out to rescue Jerry. Halted by police, he rushes to borrow Ellie's car and discovers that it is she who has been supplying marijuana to Jordan and the other teenagers. Phil forces Jordan to accompany him to the mansion where the thugs have beaten Jerry. Phil rescues Jerry, leaving Jordan to face the wrath of the gang he tried to cheat.
