Synopsis

Pat Coster's divorced father William refuses to allow her to date, even though she is eighteen years old, and her younger brother Ted belittles her for having limited social skills. At a party with Ted, Pat meets Jerry Brooks and his best friend, Stan Price. Pat and Jerry take a drive to a lake, but when they start to kiss, they fall into the water and then take refuge from the cold in an abandoned cabin. After another kiss, Pat assumes that they are engaged, but Jerry does not believe in marriage. Pat refuses to take Jerry's calls for a long time, but finally makes plans to see him at her house. That same day, Pat's mother Emily pays a surprise visit, and although her children are delighted to see her, her ex-husband William is not. Pat and Jerry resolve their differences and marry, and some time later, Jerry becomes convinced that Pat is pregnant. Emily comes for a visit and discovers that Pat is not actually pregnant, but withholds it from Jerry. During an evening with the family, during which Pat's bad temper increases while Jerry and William play with a toy train intended for her unborn child, Emily tells Jerry her version of the story, then later Pat tells Jerry the truth. Feeling deceived, Jerry leaves Pat and moves in with Stan. Later, Pat finds out that she really is pregnant, but refuses to tell Jerry. Instead, her whole family, one by one, goes to Jerry's apartment to tell him. Finally Pat comes over and, angry that her family has been meddling in her affairs, leaves. The conflict results in William and Emily getting back together, and after Jerry catches up with Pat's bus, they, too, reunite.
